Learning languages through apps
When learning languages, I’ve tried many different methods — 1:1 lessons, books, radio, YouTube, apps, and more. Among them, the one I liked the most was apps. They let me study anytime, are affordable, and can be personalized. But…
Disappointment with language apps
I tried using the expressions I learned from language apps in real conversations.
My Thai teacher said,
That word isn’t used anymore.
My American friend said,
This is such an awkward expression.
Decide to create a Korean language app
I couldn’t trust language apps anymore. Then I started wondering — what about Korean apps? So, I tried the top 10 Korean language apps from the app store. Within minutes, I found inaccurate, awkward, and unnatural expressions everywhere.
As a Korean teacher, I couldn’t just watch students learn Korean the wrong way.
So I made up my mind.
I’ll create a Korean app myself!
The Birth of Podo
But I had absolutely no idea how to make an app. So I asked for help from Dave, an American programmer and one of my Korean students.
We decided to exchange programming lessons for Korean lessons.
Starting in 2018, we met twice a week to study together, and in February 2020, we finally released the very first version of the Podo app!
